Questions

Volunteer FAQs

Everything worth knowing before you get started.

Why does Akshaya Patra need volunteers?
As a nonprofit, we rely on volunteers to raise awareness and support for our mission. Keeping operating costs low lets us focus on feeding children in India. Chapter volunteers are how we reach communities across the country.
Who can become a volunteer?
Anyone who wants to make a difference is welcome. Whether you bring a professional skill or simply time and enthusiasm, there is a role for you on a local chapter team. Volunteers under 18 should look at our Youth Ambassador program.
What if there is no chapter in my city?
Check the chapter map first, since some chapters cover a whole metro area or state. If the nearest one is still far, sign up anyway and tell us where you are. We will connect you with the closest team and talk through what starting a new chapter would involve.
How much time do I need to commit?
It is flexible and depends on your availability. Many volunteers give a few hours a month toward meetings and events, and activity tends to cluster around event dates rather than spreading evenly through the year.
Do I need to be Indian or have a connection to India?
No. Chapters welcome anyone who cares about the cause. Many volunteers come to us through a friend, a local event, or their workplace.
Will I receive volunteer hours or a certificate?
Yes. Time spent organizing events and taking part in activities can count toward school or community service hours, and after a year of active volunteering you can receive a certificate of service. Contact contact@apusa.org to request one.
Does my company offer volunteer grants or matching?
Many employers match volunteer hours or donations. Learn more on our Corporate Partnerships page, or check with your HR team about available programs.
How do I get started?
Fill out the volunteer sign-up form. Once you are registered, we connect you with a coordinator from your local chapter who will help you find the right role.
